FSSAI or the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India issues a license under FSS(Licensing and registration of food businesses) regulations, 2011. This is the most important license for starting up an eatery business in India. In this, the manufacturer, trader, and restaurants get a 14 digit registration number. It is mandatory for all the businesses to print that number on the packaging of the product. This license can be registered in among any of the following categories i.e, Central, State, Registration, and Konkan Railways. It depends upon the location and the turnover of the company.
From Feb 2013, the country from all late country from restaurant chains such as Dominos and Wow Momos to restaurants within hotels like Samrat and Shri Krishna to even school canteens and corporate cafeterias-will need an FSSAI food license from central food authority to operate.
The authority plans to randomly check food joints across the country after the February 4 deadline for obtaining the license with the help of state food authorities. FSSAI food license requirement is essential for effective working.
If a restaurant is found without a license, the authority can penalize it and even have it shut down. According to an estimate of just about 30 percent eateries in the country have taken the FSSAI food license. There are 50-60 lakh eateries in the country. Food safety has been a major challenge in India with frequent cases of food adulteration and food poisoning found in many parts of India. FSSAI Food license is easy to get online.
Many FBO, particularly small outlets, however, may find it difficult to comply with the new norms. Under the guidelines, every restaurant in every city will require a separate license. In addition, a food business firm will need a central license obtained from the head office. To get the food business operator license, all restaurants and hotels, snack bars, cafeteria’s, school and office canteens, and cafes within hospitals will need to comply with a series of strict guidelines including specific hygiene practices.
The FBO criticize the new guidelines but experts feel it’s a very important step to move in the right direction.
